Happy September Everyone! September is National Mushroom Month! Throughout the month of September we are planning to introduce some new products, share some fun facts and folklore, and cook up some fabulous recipes. We also want to hear from you! Always excited to hear how our products are being used and what our customers are growing, we encourage our clients, both new and old, to share their mushroom growing experiences–both good and bad– for the enjoyment and education of the community. National Mushroom Month
National Mushroom Month was created by the U.S. National Mushroom Council in coordination with the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Created as a part of the Mushroom Promotion, Research, and Consumer Information Act of 1990, it was signed into law on November 28, 1990, by President George H.W. Bush. National Mushroom Month was officially celebrated for the first time September 1993.
For the most authentic celebrations look to the Mushroom Capital of the World—Kennett Square. Located just outside Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, this small town produces over a million pounds of mushrooms a day. If you are looking to celebrate, Kennett Square is also home to the Annual Mushroom Festival which includes a parade, vendors, tastings, and other mushroom themed goods.
Why celebrate the humble mushroom?
The U.S. Department of Agriculture uses the month of September to educate the public on the versatility of mushrooms, including their potential health benefits. Loaded with nutrients, mushrooms are an excellent source of vitamins. These include copper, fiber, potassium, protein, selenium, vitamin B, and zinc. Continued study hopes to provide insight into their potential medicinal uses as well. With DNA more similar to humans than to plants, the possibilities could be endless.
