Soya Peptone for Mushrooms
When working with mushrooms, growing cultures to a healthy, strong state is desired by all cultivators. Peptone is a protein hydroxylate which enhances mycelia growth. Peptone is used as an additive when making culture media. Soya Peptone is available in 100g bottles.
Need to get technical? Peptone from Glycine max (soybean), Type IV is an enzymatically hydrolysed soy protein with no animal components. This peptone is used in fermentation broths as a carbohydrate and nitrogen source (peptides and free amino acids), producing consistent results. It acts comparatively well as peptones obtained from animal sources.
Mycelia also love the protein when being used in either a liquid culture or agar plate.
Pro Tip: Use a face mask when mixing peptone. It won’t hurt you but it is a very fine powder. Also, mix your agar and peptone before sterilizing. Do not sprinkle the peptone onto the culture plate after the agar has be sterilized (yes, some have done it). Lastly, if the temperature of your agar and peptone gets too hot. Don’t worry. You might see some dark (burnt flakes) in your agar but the mycelia will easily devour it!
